This is one of my favorite audio slideshows, which I made in South Africa. You can read the story here.

Here are two audioslideshows that I made for KPCC.

This is from a larger story about Artcycle, a community event to promote bicycling and the arts.

And this is from a story about a business that focuses on sharing goods, owned by a woman who is also a skilled Roller Derby “Doll”:

Here’s one from LA’s first generation, a site I made for an online reporting class:

Claudette Roche is an actress with many voices. Having lived in England, Canada and Los Angeles, she can modify her accent to fit any American, Canadian or British regional tone, and she can mimic a host of European affectations as well. As the pace of her acting career began to slow, she started to think about how she could help other expats learn to speak like Americans, and vice-versa. Now, foreign-born and native-born people from all walks of life, including theater, come to her for accent coaching.

In a typical American accent session, for example, Roche sits her client in front of a mirror and teaches them how to form uniquely American sounds with their mouths. Once they’ve mastered their new voice, they leave with an audio recording of their lesson, as well as a voice that will make them blend in among Angelenos – even if they’re from Azerbaijan.

Listen to Roche explain how she got so good at imitating different accents. What makes an American accent unique, how does one learn an American accent, and how could learning to speak in different accents be beneficial? [5 minutes]
